Changes expected for 2016 Car Show by the Sea

Car Show by the Sea

Representatives from the Legends Car Club spoke at the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council (CSPNC) meeting this week regarding this year’s Car Show by the Sea event which supports many local organizations. Changes for next years event were proposed so as to make a smaller impact on the community.

Some of the proposed changes to the 2016 event:

  1. Stage cars prior to the event in Angels Gate Park, instead of Paseo del Mar.
  2. One-day waiver of the no parking signs on the north side of Paseo del Mar (from Gaffey to Roxbury). This year LAPD handed out approximately 100 parking citations.

Neighborhood News

There’s a lot of news for our part of town this week. Grab your coffee and read on!

New CERT Class to be taught by LAPD Sr. Lead Officer Eve Wight:

The Alma Park Neighborhood Watch has requested a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) class be taught for their group. The class will be held every Saturday starting on Saturday February 7th from 10 am to 12 noon in the Community Room at Harbor Division Station. The Class will be co-taught by Sr. Lead Officer Wight and Officer Garcenila.

The Alma Park Block Captain has asked to extend the invitation to other neighborhood watches to see if anyone is interested. If you would like to join this class please send Officer Wight an email with your contact information to 37814@lapd.lacity.org.

Crime updates from Lower Palisades East Neighborhood Watch Lead Charles Rannells:

Turf destruction at Wilder's Annex.

  1. On January 25th at 10:15 p.m. a dark colored raised double cab pickup was seen repeatedly doing spin outs on the grass by the Wilder Annex bathrooms. It tore up an area of turf the size of a football field.
  2. On January 25th a bunch of dark colored Hondas raced up and down Paseo del Mar and through the stop sign at Barbara and Pasel del Mar;
  3. Three thefts from vehicles, two on upper Emily, one on W. 37th near Leland;  two were from unlocked vehicles;
  4. The destruction of a garage door padlock on upper Cabrillo;
  5. Repeated sightings of a hooded young man on a bike suspiciously eyeing properties on Roxbury;
  6. A grey fairly recent model Mustang speeding westward down the center lane of PDM at ca. 70 mph at 10:30 in the morning, then through the Barbara Street stop sign without slowing down, then up a side street; too fast to get a description or license plate number. Any leads on who this might be are most welcome and will be treated confidentially of course.
  7. Recently a vehicle was broken into on the 3600 block of Emily near W. 37th.

Officer Wight has been asked by the Auto Detectives to put out a quick alert about a new trend being seen mostly in the Point Fermin neighborhood. Work trucks and vans with external locking mechanisms (padlocks, etc.) are being targeted. Thieves are prying off the external locks and raiding the vans for heavy equipment (compressors, power tools, etc.). If you or someone you know brings their work home with them, encourage them to park in a gated driveway or garage. If you can manage it, try backing your van up against a wall or some other item to block access to the rear doors.

The burglary of garages and carports continues to be a problem as well. Detectives are working hard to identify any suspects that might be responsible. If you see someone cruising alleys late at night, on a bike or in a car, passing by multiple times, pausing in front of different homes or alley garages, try to get a good description and a license plate (if it’s a car) and don’t be afraid to call it in!

New stop signs at Paseo del Mar and Roxbury

Be careful when driving down Paseo del Mar. At the request of the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council and local residents, new stop signs have been installed on Paseo del Mar at Roxbury.

USMC Training Exercises at Warehouse One between April 11–13, 2015

Be forewarned…the United States Marine Corp (USMC) will be conducting dynamic training exercises at Warehouse 1 (Berth 69 at the southern end of Signal Street in the Port of Los Angeles) between April 11–13, 2015 in order to evaluate and certify forces preparing from deployment overseas.

Members of the Maritime Raid Force (MRF) will conduct a raid of the target site and they will approach from the sea during hours of darkness.  The exercise force will use blank-fire ammunition, flash-bangs and smoke generating devices for added realism.  Helicopter operations will be included in this event (including people rappelling from a rope).  There may also be sniper live-fire and small explosions.

Filming by Korean Friendship Bell

There is a scheduled film shoot by the Korean Friendship Bell on Monday, February 2. From the looks of the description, it looks like there will be some barbecuing for a Target commercial, but I could be wrong. :-)

Point Fermin Residents’ Meeting

The next Point Fermin Residents meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, February 7 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Redmen’s Hall, 543 Shepard Street.

Tentative Agenda:
9:00 a.m.  LAPD Sr. Lead Officer Eve Wight. Officer Wight will have to leave no later than 9:30, so if you have issues you wish to discuss with her, you must be at the meeting early.

9:30 a.m.  Updates on Sunken City, the Lighthouse ownership, Hey Rookie Pool renovations, Angels Gate, and Port activity

Adjourn by 11 a.m.

If you have specific issues, please email them to June Burlingame Smith at burling102@aol.com ahead of time so she can try to make sure your concerns are addressed by the proper people.

That’s all for now. Enjoy your day!
