Hug a Seal Day (well, sort of)

The Marine Mammal Care Center will be holding two volunteer orientations on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21 at 1:00 pm in the MMCC classroom. You may attend either day. Orientations are approximately one to two hours long and you do not need to do anything prior to attending.

You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer and be able to volunteer at least one day a week for 12 months. The MMCC is in need of both educational volunteers and animal care volunteers.

Photos of Royal Palms seal release & more!

We have a community photo album started on Flickr where residents and visitors can share their photos and videos of our beautiful coastal neighborhood. There you can find the picture story of the release this month of two harbor seals and an elephant seal named Ellie. After being nurtured back to health at the Marine Mammal Care Center at Angels Gate, the MMCC team released them back into the ocean at Royal Palms Beach on December 8.

Ellie, the young elephant seal, gets her first taste of freedom since being cared for at the Marine Mammal Care Center.

The two harbor seals head for the ocean at Royal Palms Beach.

The Marine Mammal Care Center team. Pinniped heros!

To see the rest of the photos from the release visit The San Pedro Coast Flickr Pool.

Please feel free to post up your photos of the San Pedro coast neighborhood to share with your friends and neighbors. We will highlight the most recent photos on our home page.

Here’s your chance to see three pinnipeds released back to the ocean.

The Marine Mammal Care Center will be releasing three rehabilitated patients (including their super cute elephant seal pup!) this coming Thursday 12/8 at 9:00 am at White Point State Beach in San Pedro. Feel free to come out and say “good bye” to their rehabed pinniped patients.
Release times are not set in stone, so when they say 9:00 am it could be 9:15 or 9:30 or…so please be patient. Things can always change due to weather, etc.
If you have any questions, feel free to give a call to the Care Center at 310-548-5677.
Hope to see you there!
