The International Bird Rescue Center at Angels Gate has an incredible story about a rescued Laysan Albatross. This bird with a 6′ 9″ wingspan ended up hitching a free ride in the bed of a pickup truck before it was taken in to the rescue center. This is very unusual for a bird that can spend 3–5 years at sea at a time.
Today, Tuesday, January 31, the bird will be released back into the wild in yet another unusual way. To deter the bird from flying back onto land, the Albatross will be taken a half-mile out to sea via lifeguard boat to be released.

***UPDATE*** The LA Times has an article and several photos of the release.
