Have you visited the newly restored Hey Rookie Pool yet? The pool will be open year-round and is ready for the public to use.

Several activities have already started besides the daily open swim — lap swimming, youth and adult swim lessons (group, semi-private, and private) and adult aquacize. For ages 7–17 there is a swimming team and synchronized swimming team. Ages 10–17 can join the Junior Lifeguard program to learn some valuable skills.

Paseo del Mar Draft EIR released. Upcoming meeting.

Paseo del Mar reconstruction options map

The Bureau of Engineering, Department of Public Works has released the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the Paseo del Mar Permanent Restoration Project. It is available for public review at http://eng.lacity.org/techdocs/emg/paseodelmar_restoration.htm, the San Pedro Library, Miraleste Library, Council District 15 office in San Pedro, and at the Bureau of Engineering downtown. This project is in the pre-design phase. Concurrently, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) work is progressing.

There will be a 60-day review period from April 6 – June 5. Public comment is encouraged. Comments will be accepted from April 6, 2017 to June 5, 2017. Submit comments by e-mail to William.Jones@lacity.org (please include “Paseo Del Mar Comments” in the subject line), by fax to (213) 847-0656, or in writing to the address below no later than 5:00 p.m on June 5, 2017.

Angels Gate Park Advisory Board 2/28 agenda

Tonight at 5pm there will be an Angels Gate Park Advisory Board (PAB) meeting at the Angels Gate Park office (in the courtyard with the Hosteling International office on 36th/Leavenworth off of Gaffey Street).

The PAB covers the areas of White Point Nature Preserve, Wilder’s Addition, Point Fermin Park, Sunken City, Lookout Park, and Angels Gate Park.

Meetings regarding parks, San Pedro High School, and coyotes

There are three meetings coming up that residents may be interested in attending.

The Angels Gate Park Advisory Board will be holding a meeting Tuesday, January 31 from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm at the Angels Gate Park Office at 3601 S. Gaffey St. On the agenda are discussions of Wilder’s Annex, White Point Nature Preserve, and Hey Rookie Pool. Check out the full agenda on the Angels Gate Park Advisory Board Facebook page.

LAUSD will be hosting a community meeting to review preliminary design concepts for a renovation of San Pedro High School. The meeting takes place on Tuesday, January 31 at 6:00 pm at the San Pedro High School Auditorium at 1001 W 15th St. If you would like more information call Teresa Akins at FSD Community Relations at 213-241-1326 or Teresa.Akins@lausd.net.

L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation presents Living With Urban Coyotes on Thursday, February 2 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Wildlife Specialist Colleen MacKay will be discussing issues and concerns relating to coyotes. The Deane Dana Friendship Park Nature Center is located at 1805 W. 9th St. For more information contact 310-519-6115 or hinzunza@parks.lacounty.gov.

Care about our Parks? Join the Park Advisory Board!

A call for volunteers to sit on and make up the Park Advisory Board has been made to all interested persons. The Board is a collection of all community members from the White Point Nature Preserve, Wilders Addition, Point Fermin Park, Sunken City, Angels Gate Park and Tenant Organizations and residents who have an interest in helping to shape the events and future of our shared community.

The next meeting is set for Wednesday, August 17th, 6:00 pm at the Angels Gate Park office (shares the courtyard with the Hosteling International office on 36th/Leavenworth).

 If you are interested in joining the Board please see the Volunteer forms as well and register on line (if you are not already a registered City of LA volunteer). Individual volunteers need to apply online at https://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/ap?AP=1522641864

Olguin pool opening for the summer

The Olguin pool at San Pedro High School’s Olguin campus will be open for the summer starting Saturday, June 11. The pool will be open through August 14 thanks to a partnership between LAUSD and the City of L.A.’s Recreation and Parks Department.

21 Gun Salute on Friday

This Friday there will be a memorial service for a fallen veteran at Point Fermin Park. The memorial service will include a 21 Gun Salute between 9:00 am and 9:30 am.

Changes expected for 2016 Car Show by the Sea

Car Show by the Sea

Representatives from the Legends Car Club spoke at the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council (CSPNC) meeting this week regarding this year’s Car Show by the Sea event which supports many local organizations. Changes for next years event were proposed so as to make a smaller impact on the community.

Some of the proposed changes to the 2016 event:

  1. Stage cars prior to the event in Angels Gate Park, instead of Paseo del Mar.
  2. One-day waiver of the no parking signs on the north side of Paseo del Mar (from Gaffey to Roxbury). This year LAPD handed out approximately 100 parking citations.
  3. Move the LAPD command post from the corner of Gaffey and Paseo del Mar up to Angels Gate Park by the Korean Bell.

Community Meeting scheduled to discuss future of Paseo del Mar

URS, the engineering firm that the City of Los Angeles has hired to reconstruct Paseo del Mar at the White Point Landslide location, is holding a community briefing meeting on October 28. 

The community is invited to bring ideas, suggestions, and questions on what URS should be aware of or consider in their developing designs. Individual comments will be accepted in writing only. Hilton Yee, senior project manager of URS, will lead the meeting.

The City of Los Angeles contracted with URS (now merged with AECOM) to do pre-design work and develop a permanent solution for reconstructing Paseo del Mar.  According to URS, funding for construction has not been identified, nor has a Continue reading
